Arnold Roth: Free Lance
A Fifty Year Retrospective
Organized by The Cartoon Research Library of Ohio State University and The University of the Arts, the “Arnold Roth: Free Lance” exhibition features approximately 70 works that were produced for popular and widely distributed publications, including The New Yorker, TIME, Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Punch, and The New York Times. The exhibition opened at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in September 2001 and toured.
The opening exhibition festivities included a reception of over 400, the reading of Philadelphia Mayor John Street's proclamation of Arnold Roth Day in Philadelphia, and a Children's Cartoon Workshop featuring cartooning demonstrations by Arnold Roth, Pulitzer Prize-winning Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Cartoonist Tony Auth, Pulitzer Prize-winning Philadelphia Daily News Editorial Cartoonist Signe Wilkinson,"Jump Start" comic strip cartoonist Robb Armstrong, and a surprise appearance by Mutts comic strip cartoonist Patrick McDonnell.
The exhibition was curated by Lucy Shelton Caswell, Professor and Curator, The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, with assistance from Eugene Bolt, The University of the Arts, and Caroline Roth. The accompanying exhibition catalogue,"Arnold Roth: Free Lance," was published by Fantographic Books and features a preface by Alan Coren, former editor of Punch magazine, and an introduction by Robert C. Harvey.
